Process

Since every assignment is different, we tailor our work phases and deliverables to the unique needs of each project but the basic processes are the same for all projects. They serve as the framework within which we identify and address each projectsą challenges and reach their design solutions. Our process includes six steps:

1: Research / Discovery
We immerse ourselves in the particulars of a project, gathering as much information as possible. Our activities during the Research / Discovery phase include meeting with other members of the project team, reviewing municipal code restrictions and ordinances, site plan evaluations for all other discipline involvement and the development criteria.

2: Programming and Planning
This phase is as important as the design phase in that it establishes the needs for the whole project. It also includes wayfinding - a word that is often misused for programming. In this phase, we will meet with the client to determine necessary information and use of signage elements to be designed and developed. Basic sign types are developed into the hierarchies of information, identification, directional and regulatory categories with preliminary message schedules based on the project site and building plans.

3: Schematic Design
Develop various design concepts for the component system of signs. This typically includes two presentations. The first presentation reflects massing and heights based on message schedules and their associated size requirements for visibility and safety. The second presentation shows approximate sizes, shapes, forms, colors and materials, as well as recommended typography, copy wording and type layouts for the various components or design elements.

4: Design Development
Development of all the signage system's final use of materials, colors, type styles, message schedules and nomenclature, and final copy layout and formats.

5: Design Documentation / Design Intent Drawings
Design documenation is the production of the final designs into comprehensive sign programs for submission to governmental agencies for formal approval that allow for future permitting of the system for the Client. JRC Design consistently represents its clients at these design approval processes.

Design Intent drawings are provided to the Client for production and bidding purposes. These drawings include elevations and plan views for all sign types, with specifications for all colors and materials, final graphic schedules and quantities, final signage locations on site and floor plans, general performance specifications and bidding procedures.

6: Contract Administration / Supervision
This phase includes supervision and coordination with the client's selected fabricator to assure that the signage elements are fabricated per the design intent drawings and specifications. JRC Design is there to respond to all questions during the bidding process, issue clarifications and review all bids with the Client.

Following the selection of a fabricator and contract award, JRC Design works closely with the fabricator to ensure that the drawings are interpreted correctly by the facility, all materials, colors and finishes match specifications, and implementation of the system goes smoothly. The partnering with the fabricator is imperative because it helps resolve problems efficiently and quickly, which is always is more cost effective for everyone on the team.
